What is the best way to edit a PDF?

Enfocus Pitstop is still the best way to edit a PDF file. With the full version of Adobe Acrobat 9.0, you will find more editing tools than ever. But since there are still limitations to what Acrobat can do, it is recommended that Pitstop be installed on at least one workstation at your shop.

Adobe CS3 kept crashing, so we decided to reinstall. Now when activating CS3, we get a message saying that the maximum number of activations has been reached. How did this happen?

Adobe allows the owner of CS3 to have two copies of the application activated at the same time. This is for the pre-press professional who has CS3 on both a desktop and laptop. In this case, it would appear that another individual has loaded your copy of CS3 on at least two other computers. To solve your problem, you must de-activate one of these copies before you can reinstall and activate your copy.

What is the preferred method of creating a PDF out of Quark Xpress 7?

There is no "preferred" method of creating a PDF out of Quark Xpress 7.0, just a lesser of two evils. One method is to export the PDF out of Quark, but you may have less than desirable results on most occasions due to the quality of the engine creating it. The second method is to print to a PostScript file and then distill it to a PDF. This will deliver a higher quality PDF, but you will have flattened the native file very early on in the process and this may cause problems with transparencies and other design features associated with the layering of the file. The best solution for this issue is to purchase the upgrade to Quark 8.0 or ask your designers to work with the Adobe Creative Suite package.
